Barack Obama is the first candidate Oprah Winfrey has endorsed since being on-air 21 years ago. Maybe it is all about the “O” as Overstock claims. Or maybe Oprah is curious about the scope of her influence on the public. But can her endorsement elect someone into presidency?
Oprah is one of the most-powerful women, if not person, in the entire world. Any merchant, vendor, author, or entrepreneur can tell you their product sales skyrocketed after appearing on the show. But Oprah has made some mistakes. Remember “A Million Little Pieces”? Oprah supported the author’s self-proclaimed autobiographical novel and the book sales escalated to Best Seller’s lists across the country. After the public learned the novel was fiction, Oprah was criticized immensely. Still there is no question about Oprah’s clout and effect she has on the masses, especially women.
Many women love and trust her voice. Oprah’s book club alone has millions of readers who religiously buy and read every book she introduces. Oprah’s charity, Angels Network, has raised more than 50 million since established in 1997. Oprah’s national magazine “O” started in 2000 with 500,000 copies. Currently, there are now over 2.6 million subscribers. Nevertheless, Oprah does not have the same power on men. Several men have come out and said unkind words about the media mogul. Most have a problem with her tact as being brainwashing and “cult-like”.
Fan or not, one has to believe Oprah’s endorsement of Obama will have an impact on voters. Time will tell if Oprah’s endorsement will help Obama get elected into the White House.
