Cashmere Mafia premiered on ABC last Sunday, January 6th.
Intrigued, but not ready to commit, I tivoed the episode instead and watched it last night. While there were a few funny innuendos, overall, the show lacks depth and chemistry. Admittedly, I am a HUGE Sex & the City fan. When the show was airing, I often told people, “I’m a Carrie” and may have squealed or exclaimed I “love, love, LOVE” something. With that being said, I couldn’t help but compare this watered-down version to the hit HBO show.
PROBLEM NUMERO UNO: In one hour (technically 48 minutes without commercials), Lucy Lui was proposed to and dumped, the blonde girl turned into a lesbian, Miranda-look-a-like found out her husband was cheating with an acquaintance, and the brunette lost a nanny, hired and lost another nanny. Before the characters were fully developed, the pilot diluted 2 full seasons of Sex and the City.
PROBLEM NUMERO DOS: Despite the show titled, Cashmere Mafia, I didn’t see one article of clothing remotely resembling cashmere. Boo ABC. Boo.
PROBLEM NUMERO TRES: The characters in Cashmere Mafia didn’t illustrate genuine friendship. During the final moments of the pilot, Lucy Lui tells the 3 other girls at the table (yes, they are constantly in a restaurant like SATC) that she doesn’t know what she would do without them. Instead of creating a heartfelt moment, Lucy Lui delivers the line forceful and without a twinkle in her eyes. After the show ended, I felt as empty as the acting.
In February another “girls in the city” show will premiere based on Candace Bushnell’s (author of Sex and the City) newest book, Lipstick Jungle. Hopefully this show will begin with a taste of genuine friendship and character foundation. I plan on tivoing this as well and will report back in a month.
XOXO, Neurotic Nancy
